What Does the Word “Magical” Really Mean?

The key to understanding the word “magical” is the element of the supernatural. To describe something as magical means it is exceedingly rare and not subject to the laws of the natural world. It means being transported from our usual perception of reality into another realm, especially in a way that causes delight and surprise.

How Travel Brings Magic Into Our Lives

It’s very rare that we get an opportunity to leave our ordinary lives behind. Kids do it all the time playing make believe and pretending they are someone or somewhere else. But let’s face it, into every life a little drudgery must fall. Whether it’s going to work everyday, cooking and cleaning, or managing carpools, we all need an escape from the mundane. Magic is being able to throw a sheet over the daily grind and making it vanish for a little while. In my experience, there’s not a lot capable of doing that. That’s why I love travel so much.

Travel Literally Changes Our Brain and Our Perceptions

There is a certain level of contentment staying at home and going about our normal routine. But seeing and doing the same things every day causes tunnel vision to the point where the flowers in the yard or the mountains outside the window are no longer noticed. Getting away for a while awakens these deadened senses so upon returning home our appreciation for the life we live is recharged.

Though traveling creates uncertainty, where there is risk there are great rewards. By visiting different cultures and communities, we step out of the ordinary into the extraordinary. People who travel often experience new realizations about their lives because they step outside of their box frequently. Seeing life through a different set of eyes or walking in someone else’s shoes forces us to challenge our assumptions and modify our perceptions. Being introduced to new experiences even causes the brain to make new connections at the cellular level resulting in greater physical and mental health.
