With its abundant artistic offerings, stunning year-round weather, and beautiful beaches, it’s no surprise that Sarasota has earned numerous accolades in the last year such as #1 Best Place to Visit in Florida 2022 and #9 Best Place to Live in the U.S. 2021 by U.S. News & World Reports and #2 Best U.S. Beach (Siesta Key) 2022 by Tripadvisor.
Read on to explore just a few of the many cultural events, art exhibits and opportunities to experience the culinary arts in this community of endless opportunities to try something new. It is indeed the cultural mecca of Florida.
This is one of the largest drum circles in the nation and has been taking place every Sunday an hour before sunset since 1996. It brings together visitors and locals alike and attracts an eclectic group of spectators and performers in an artsy, hippie atmosphere. The only rule is that those in the circle cannot stand still. You must dance, do a Conga line, hula hoop or some other impromptu movement.
The lively Bayfront Park in downtown Sarasota boasts a tiki bar, playground, sculptures, walking loop, and scenic waterfront views. It is also host to multiple art shows throughout the year. I thoroughly enjoyed the latest, Embracing Our Differences, which stimulated great discussion about the meaning of the art and accompanying quotations.
Since 2004, Embracing Our Differences has used the power of art and prose to promote diversity. One way this is accomplished is through an annual international art exhibition. The juried exhibit consists of 50 billboard-sized works of art, each accompanied by an inspirational quote.
The statements accompanying each artwork are also vital and provide insight into our common humanity—as well as the differences that make us all unique. The artwork and quotations are separate competitions, judged blindly by volunteer committees, and matched together for this exhibit.
This is a great way to immerse yourself in the culture, history, and culinary arts of Anna Maria Island. You stroll through the streets lined with galleries and boutiques and stop at several local eateries to taste some of the best culinary delights this charming island just north of Sarasota has to offer. As a bonus you also get to stop at the island’s museum and old city jail.
